Song Wat Road was created during the reign of King Rama V in the late 19th century. Its unusual name comes from the story that the King drew the route of the new road on a map — giving it the name Song Wat, meaning roughly “drawn by the King.”
With the Chao Phraya River just beside it, Song Wat grew into an important trading district. Merchants, warehouses and shophouses filled the neighborhood, handling goods arriving by river and connecting Chinatown with Bangkok’s wider commercial network.
Historic shophouses and trading businesses now share Song Wat with independent brands, cafés and creative spaces. Take time to notice both sides of the neighborhood.
Today, much of that character is still here. Old shophouses, warehouses, Chinese signs and long-running businesses now sit alongside street art, independent shops, Thai brands, cafés and new creative spaces.
Don't just walk through Song Wat — look up, look around and notice how old and new Bangkok share the same street.
Take your time as you walk deeper into Song Wat. Historic shophouses, old warehouses and Chinese signs now share the street with murals, independent shops and a new generation of Thai creative businesses.
This part of the day isn't about getting from one attraction to another. The street itself is the experience.
DON’T MISS — Song Wat Street Art
